Social Media Strategy for Local Businesses

Social media for a local business is different from social media for a national brand or an influencer. Your audience isn't the entire internet — it's the people in your community who might walk through your door, order from you, or book your services. Your strategy should reflect that.

1. You Don't Need to Be Everywhere

A restaurant doesn't need LinkedIn. A law firm probably doesn't need TikTok. Pick the one or two platforms where your actual customers spend time and do those well. For most local businesses, that's Facebook and Instagram. If your audience is under 30, TikTok may be worth the investment. If you're B2B, LinkedIn matters.

2. Consistency Beats Virality

Going viral is exciting but unreliable. What actually builds a business is showing up consistently — posting regularly, responding to comments, and staying visible. A local business that posts three times a week for a year will build more real customer relationships than one that posts sporadically hoping for a viral hit.

3. Show Your Real Business

People connect with people. Behind-the-scenes content — your team at work, products being made, a walk through your space — often performs better than polished promotional posts. It builds trust and makes your business feel real and accessible.

4. Local Content Wins Locally

Tag your location. Mention local landmarks and events. Share content that's relevant to your community. A Minneapolis restaurant posting about the Farmers Market or a snow day connects with local followers in a way generic food photos never will.

5. Turn Followers Into Customers

Followers are nice. Customers are better. Every few posts should include a clear next step: "Order online," "Book your appointment," "Stop by this weekend." Don't assume followers know how to become customers — tell them.
