How to Create a Marketing Plan for a New Business

Starting a new business is overwhelming. You need customers, but you can't afford to spend money on everything at once. A smart marketing plan helps you focus on the few things that will actually bring customers through the door — without wasting time and money on channels that won't.

1. Start With the Essentials

Before you spend a dollar on advertising, make sure the fundamentals are in place: a professional website (it doesn't need to be big, but it needs to look credible), a Google Business Profile (free and essential for local businesses), and a consistent brand identity (logo, colors, fonts — so you look established from day one). These are the foundation everything else builds on.

2. Identify Where Your Customers Actually Are

Don't try to be everywhere. If your customers are 45-year-old homeowners, they're probably on Facebook, not TikTok. If they're college students, Instagram and TikTok matter. If you're a B2B service, LinkedIn and Google search are your channels. Pick the one or two channels where your actual customers spend time and invest there.

3. Build a Simple Content Routine

You don't need a complicated content strategy. A simple routine — two or three social media posts per week showing your business, your work, and your customers — builds visibility and trust over time. Consistency matters more than production quality. Start before you feel ready.

4. Invest in What Compounds

Some marketing investments pay off once and then stop. Others compound — they continue to produce results long after the initial effort. SEO (search engine optimization), a well-built website, and a strong brand identity are compounding investments. A single social media ad campaign is not. In your first year, prioritize compounding investments.

5. Track What Works

Ask every new customer how they found you. Keep it simple — a note in your phone, a column in a spreadsheet. Over time, you'll see patterns: most customers come from Google, or from Instagram, or from word-of-mouth. Double down on what's working and cut what isn't. Marketing without tracking is guessing.
