Google Business Profile Setup Guide for Small Businesses

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the listing that shows up in Google Maps and the local results at the top of search. It's free, it's powerful, and for many local businesses, it drives more customers than their actual website. Here's how to set it up and optimize it properly.

Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile

Go to google.com/business and sign in with a Google account you want associated with your business. Search for your business name — it may already exist as an unclaimed listing. If it does, claim it. If not, create a new profile. Google will need to verify that you're the real business owner, usually by mailing a postcard with a verification code to your business address.

Step 2: Complete Every Field

Fill in everything — business name exactly as it appears in the real world, address (consistent with your website and every other listing), phone number, website URL, hours of operation, and business category. Choose your primary category carefully — this determines which searches you show up in. Add secondary categories if relevant. Every field you leave blank is a missed opportunity.

Step 3: Add Real Photos Regularly

Businesses with photos get more clicks and more direction requests. Add your logo, a cover photo that represents your business, and real photos of your space, products, team, and work. Don't use stock photos — real images build trust. Add new photos regularly; an active profile signals to Google that your business is engaged and relevant.

Step 4: Use Google Posts

Google Posts are short updates that appear directly in your Business Profile — offers, events, new products, or simply a message about what you do. They expire after seven days (unless they're event posts), so post consistently. Think of it as a mini social-media feed inside your Google listing.

Step 5: Respond to Reviews

Respond to every review — positive and negative. Thank people who leave good reviews. Address negative reviews professionally and offer to make things right. Your responses are public and show potential customers that you're engaged and care about feedback. Never argue or get defensive.

Step 6: Keep It Updated

Update your hours for holidays. Add new photos. Post regularly. Answer questions in the Q&A section. An abandoned profile hurts more than no profile at all — it suggests the business might be closed or unresponsive.
